As the final buzzer sounded to conclude the
2nd Annual Scooter Sherrill Alumni Throwback Tournament, the story ended just as it was supposed to: The NBA/NFL Throwback Cheerleaders rushed the court with their pom-poms raised high,
DJ JLee pumped up the sounds behind the DJ booth, and the crowd filled with supportive county-sports fans joined the West Rowan faithful in congratulating some of their favorite Falcons of old... #salute
West Rowan wins, again!
Some of us were older than others, and in gearing up for the
Championship Game, it was funny seeing one of the
youngest Falcons rubbing down his joints with Ben Gay! Haha, what was even more hilarious was the moment when the rest of the team in the locker room came to the common consensus that we all were just waiting on someone else to break out the lube from their own sports bag first! Hahahaa!!
So with creaking bones, popping joints, and a few pot bellies over hanging the brim of their shorts, them Dirty Birds from West Rowan, led by county scoring legends,
Scooter Sherrill and
Dontae Minter, took the court to prove who was STILL the best in the region!! After a slow start, the South Rowan Raiders, led by another County great,
Carlos Dixon, jumped out to a 15-5 lead and slumped back into a stingy 2-3 Zone defense (boo!). However, with their noted uptempo-style of play and clutch basket-making ability, the Falcons quickly swooped back into the game to simply do what we do best... and that's WIN!!! At the end of the day, the Falcons were able to create high percentage scoring opportunities by funneling the rock through Minter, and they maintained their composure well enough to bring the tournament trophy back home once again. In a 10-point victory, that seemed a little closer than that, the West Rowan Falcons became back-to-back, repeat Champions!!
Due to some injuries and other player commitments, this wasn't even the best group of former players that we could have produced. Missing from last year's team were players like
Terris Sifford,
Jamel Carpenter,
Phillip Williams, and
Brian Avery. So at this rate, you would be crazy not to bet your last penny that we, the West Rowan Falcons will be back to create an Alumni Tournament Dynasty with a 3-Peat next summer, like YAK!!!
